Set up for failure

Have you ever been in a workplace situation when you felt you really had little opportunity to speak your mind? This can come about because your contribution and ideas are drowned out and overlooked by those above you in the company pecking order. Too many voices. Too many pulls and pushes.

The worst position I’ve experienced is having two people to whom I needed to report. There were tensions between them so I needed to do some quick thinking and be careful I did not cross sensitive matters from one party to the other. They both had egos. As soon as I could I moved on.

This is probably one of the most unhealthiest working arrangements for anyone to juggle. Did I suffer stress? Did I get sick? Yes to both. There’s a reason why Jesus said, ‘No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.’ This is wisdom for living.

Imagine having more than two people to report to and some in another State?

No wonder some people suffer from stress in the workplace. It seems to me the best reporting relationship is with one up-line only. When there is more than one ‘master’ the natural response is to keep quiet to avoid trouble. This is when good ideas can be stifled. It is detrimental to the mental health and well-being of the employee.

A set up for failure.

My advice is make plans to move on as soon as possible. Be where you are celebrated not tolerated.
